Guest Post: Pregnant for the 2nd Time!

I asked Jay to tell me….What’s been different for you in your second pregnancy compared to your first? And, to my surprise, there was a TON that was different for her. In her own words…..

How My Second Pregnancy Compared to My First

Have you ever woken up after what should have been a brilliant 9 hour sleep and felt absolutely exhausted? Welcome to my life!

I am 22yo, 32 weeks pregnant and I have a 16 1/2 month old son who I swear some days is going on 10!

My husband and I had planned on waiting until our son, Toby, was around 2 before we would start trying for our second child, but sometimes life has other plans and I fell pregnant when Toby was just 11 months old!

My first pregnancy had been one of those beautiful pregnancies that you read about in books and say “they must be lying, it’s nothing like that”! I had none of those pregnancy symptoms! No morning sickness, no sore breasts, no loss of energy; instead I ended up being admitted to hospital 3 times! The first 2 were with what they called silent migraines that were causing me to have hand tremors and passing out at random times, which put me as high risk and made me give up working to go on maternity leave when I was 19 weeks.

The last time I was admitted was at 34 weeks due to intense hip and pelvic pain due to my having an odd shaped pelvis, they booked me in for a c section on my due date.

I ended up being induced on my due date and had a natural birth.

My cravings were all savory and I lived on steamed potato, sweet potato and pumpkin smothered in salt and butter, Mcdonald’s breakfast, and oven-cooked fish and chips with salt and sour cream!

I also knew I was having a little boy from the day I found out I was pregnant. It was just a feeling I had and it was confirmed at our 19 week scan.

This time around has been a complete shock to my system!

I am exhausted, my breasts are sore and have grown from a B cup up to a D cup, I have more pimples than a teenager and the morning sickness left for about a month and is now back again!

I have every pregnancy symptom in the book and I now understand how unglamorous pregnancy can truly be, not to mention adding a toddler into the mix!

Apart from all those things, I have cruised through this pregnancy easily, I am low risk, and I feel that I barely see the midwives compared to my last pregnancy.

My cravings this time around have been all sweet! I live on timtam’s, lime cordial, chocolate and apricot chicken!

From the very start I knew that this pregnancy was different, and I was fairly certain that we were having a little girl this time around but I wasn’t 100% sure; maybe it was the fact that I wanted one of each so bad that I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

Once again at my 19 week scan my feelings were confirmed and we are expecting a little girl due on the 16th of July.

Pregnancy is a lot more tiring the second time around now that I have to run around after a toddler, and I was working up until I was 30 weeks, but when I think about it I am one of those lucky mums that has a toddler that has slept between 7-12 hours since he was 3 months old!

Friday Recap (with Pictures!)

I am going to TRY taking more pictures from now on. I think that posts are way more fun when there is something look at. Who wants to read a whole bunch of text all the time? Not I, said the cat.

I have a lovely walk to work. It’s a little over 1 mile, mostly uphill. Today was particularly exhausting (extra pressure because of the baby, and my legs were extra tired because of yesterday’s workout). So I took my sweet time and decided to take pictures along the way!

I thought these were lovely! Does anyone know what they are? Some in the middle there were slightly different colors.

I’m not quite sure what this is – was it used for tying up horses a hundred years ago? Serious question!

3 cemetery

There’s a beautiful cemetery right when I make it up “the big hill”. Sometimes, I see deer roaming around in there.

4 monkey tree

This is called a monkey tail tree. It’s spiny all the way down every single branch, and it blooms all year. It’s amazing.

5 cupcakes

From time to time, Cheryl, at work, takes a big order to Georgetown Cupcake. I DID eat both of them, but I only ate about half of each. So really, that’s just ONE cupcake total. 🙂

Someone dropped 17 cents on the ground and didn’t bother picking it up! Jackpot! And because I found such a treasure, we went out for dinner….

Here’s my fine husband, once more. He got something with mushrooms and all that mess on it. Apparently it was delicious. He wouldn’t shut up about it. 🙂

And THAT, my friends, was Friday.

It doesn’t include the last 3 hours because that was the childbirth class. We go back tomorrow from about 9:30-4:00, and I will post a recap of that either tomorrow evening or Sunday!

Pie for Dinner

Tonight we are enjoying two of my mama’s recipes (she’s the best cook in the world): Chicken Pot Pie for the main course and a version of Eclair Pie for dessert!

There are lots of versions of Chicken Pot Pie out there, but this is basically my favorite ever. And when I made it for Cameron the first time, he fell in love. So, I’d say it’s the best in the world.

Here’s what you’ll need:
1 whole chicken, boiled (or just pick up a cooked rotisserie chicken)
4 eggs
1 can of mixed vegetables
1 can of cream of chicken
3 cups of chicken broth
onion flakes
salt and pepper
1 stick of butter, melted
2 cups of milk
2 cups of flour

Directions

1. Boil the chicken! If it’s already boiled/cooked, you can obviously skip this step.

2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or about 175 Celsius).

3. Boil your 4 eggs.

4. While the eggs are boiling, pull apart your chicken.

5. Once the chicken is pulled, the eggs should be done boiling. You’ll want to peel them. I’m really bad at peeling eggs….

6. Now slice them into little pieces. I use an egg slicer and just turn the egg once.

7. In a big bowl, put the eggs, the can of cream of chicken, the mixed vegetables, onion flakes (just a few sprinkles), salt (a few sprinkles), shredded chicken, and the chicken broth. We make our own broth by boiling the bones for a long time!

8. This is the inside. Now onto the crust! Melt your stick of butter.

9. In a separate bowl, you’ll mix the butter, milk, and flour. That’s the crust.

10. Putting it all together: Pour the innards into a pan (we don’t have a 9×13, so we just use two smaller pans). Then pour the crust on top.

11. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour!

For the dessert….

For the eclair pie, you’ll need these few items:
1 tub of Cool Whip
1 package of vanilla pudding (and milk to make it into pudding)
1/2 can of chocolate frosting
About 1 sleeve of graham crackers

Directions

1. Start by mixing the pudding using the directions on the box.

2. Once it’s pudding-y, mix in the tub of Cool Whip.

3. Now layer! In a pan, put a layer of graham crackers, followed by a layer of the pudding mixture, then more graham crackers, pudding, crackers, pudding, and so on. I suggest making the top layer crackers!

4. Spread some chocolate frosting on top!

5. Fridge it up for about an hour before eating (just so it softens up a little). It lasts and is delicious for at least a week.

Ultimate Blog Party 2013

Cameron and I had a pizza party tonight. It was just the two of us, and we ordered Papa John’s!

Here is a little about me:
My name is Bethany, and I am currently 7 months pregnant (due the beginning of June). My fabulous, amazing, handsome, wonderful husband is Cameron. Here is an older picture of the two of us, from last summer (2012):

Here is a little about the blog:
This blog is essentially a way for me to keep up with my first pregnancy, first birth, first baby, first toddler, and so on. I want to look back and remember the way things felt, the way things were. It will help me (I hope) to stay positive since I will NOT be posting a grumbling, negative post every time! Also, if I have a second child, I want to be able to compare, week by week, the way that I’m feeling and looking.

I have not been writing for very long, but I am starting to recognize the value of consistency. I will do my best to write one post per day (or at least 5 posts per week). I want to start adding more pictures. I need followers! There are only 5 people who ever look at this thing, besides me.

If you’re visiting for the first time, I’d appreciate feedback or suggestions, especially if your blog has a lot of traffic!

Today’s Diet

I have been fortunate so far in that I have not really had particular food aversions. Here is what I have had today:

Woke up at 6:00 because I was starving, so I had a banana and some water and went back to sleep.

When I woke up again at 8:30, I made two over-medium eggs, a piece of bacon, and an English muffin with strawberry jam. All with a cup of tea. YES caffeine, but that’s okay.

At around 11:00, I had tuna fish and crackers, some diced peaches, and one chocolate chip cookie.

At 1:45, I made a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup and a glass of milk.

It is just now about 2:00, and I’m hungry again. I may eat some ice cream.

Tonight we are going to dinner at Cheesecake Factory, but that is not until 7. I will need at least one more big meal before then. Maybe I will make some chicken and rice. 🙂

General update

I’m almost 8 weeks now, and I am itching to tell my students. I’ve been snacking in class and leaving to go to the bathroom a lot, but I can’t tell them why! 4 more weeks seems like a lot.

Another thing I need to research is my diet. I hear little bits and pieces from different people, but if I put all those tips together, it seems I can’t eat a dang thing! So I need to investigate.

Tomorrow is my mom’s birthday, and it is also my second OB appointment. We will talk a lot about diet and exercise and so on. I have lots of questions! I think it’s important to have questions prepared ahead of time, so I recorded questions any time they came to me. Otherwise it’s hard to come up with questions on the spot!

I am so tired these days. This is how it goes for the first trimester, I have heard. I just have to make it through 4 more weeks, and I should hopefully get a boost of energy.

For now, it’s dinner time. Sweet potatoes with tuna and corn.
